Contains 171 entries including definitions, medical recipes, and prescriptions for ailments, diseases, and pregnancy. Occasional entries concern matters of materia medica or natural history.

Scope and Contents

The collection consists of an autographed letter signed, 14 Oct. 1808, from physician Benjamin Rush, 1746-1813, to a Mr. Mulford. The letter is a prescription sent or given to Mr. Mulford, who was suffering from an ailment affecting his lungs. The letter lists guidelines to follow regarding nutrition, exercise, dress, and sleep. It also recommends bloodletting and blistering in the event of chest pain or heavy coughing.

One volume of 150 prescriptions dated 2 Sept. 1887 to 18 Dec. 1898. Each entry lists patient name, prescription, and date. Some entries also contain patient address and indications. Several leaves are missing for Jan. through late March 1892.

Records of Hartshorne’s practice in Philadelphia from Jan. to Mar., 1828. Each entry describes the patient’s symptoms or ailment with some background information, then lists Hartshorne’s prescription or treatment.

Index to patient names is included.

Content Description

This collection consists of a prescription for Parkinson's disease treatment, in French, written in Paris on 4 May 1877, presumably by Dr. J. M. Charcot. The name "Dr. Seguin" also appears. A typescript copy, translated into English, is available.
