Scope and Contents The three volumes of Charles G. Fowler's collection of lecture notes documents the study of medicine at the University of Pennsylvania circa 1826. Volumes 1 and 2 consist of detailed notes from Nathaniel Chapman's course on Practice, Institutes, and Clinical Medicine. The notes describe the causes, symptoms, and treatment of fevers, blood diseases, consumption, asthma, and stomach disorders. Two volumes of notes on 52 lectures on materia medica delivered by Nathaniel Chapman between Nov. 8, 1814 and Mar. 1, 1815 at the University of Pennsylvania. Vol. 1 (123 leaves) contains lectures 1 (Nov. 8, 1814) through 25 (Dec. 22, 1814). Vol. 2 (leaves 124-247) contains lectures 26 (Dec. 23, 1814) through 52 (Mar. 1, 1815).

Scope and Contents The two volumes contain notes on lectures by Chapman, the first of which is dated 1833. The lectures were delivered either at the University of Pennsylvania or at the Medical Institute of Philadelphia. Volume one (211 numbered leaves) contains lectures on pathology, nosology, circulatory system, fevers, practice of medicine, hemorrhages, digestive system. One volume of notes on Chapman’s lectures on the practice of medicine. Internal references to Dr. Jackson, Professor of Practice, in Boston, and Dr. Physick’s recent experiments, imply a date prior to 1835. Lectures include diseases of the digestive and respiratory systems, dropsy, scrofula, and marasmus. Cullen’s classification of diseases is listed on the verso of the title page.

Two volumes of notes taken by Jacob Jeanes on the beginning lectures by Nathaniel Chapman on the practice of medicine delivered in the winter session of 1821-1822. Vol. 1 (225 pages) contains lectures on fevers. Vol. 2 (251 pages) contains lectures on hemorrhages and diseases of the digestive system. Vol. 2 also bears note “corrected in the winter of 1822-1823” and has many pencil annotations.
