Abstract The Addinell Hewson photographs of surgery patients is a small collection of seven photographs, dating between 1861 and 1865, and including tumors, fractures, and amputations.Addinell Hewson was born in 1828 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and received his M.D. from Jefferson Medical College in 1850. Scope and Contents

Since photography was invented in the mid-19th century, it has been used for medical purposes. The collection contains more than 4,000 photographs and showcases a variety of patients with diseases, injuries, and malformations, such as Civil War amputations, conjoined twins, and birth defects.

Scope and Contents The papers of John H. Brinton, spanning 1853 to 1896, consist of a ledger, patient visiting lists, general business papers, and a letterbook. These papers span more than forty years of Brinton's medical career; especially well documented in the collection are Brinton's years as a Civil War surgeon and Superintendent and Director of General Hospitals in Nashville, Tennessee. One volume. Muster roll ledger recording details of Company G of the 28th Regiment, United States Colored Infantry. This ledger records the physical descriptions, entry and discharge dates, and details of the deaths of those who succumbed to enemy action or illness. Scope and Contents

The collection contains letters, claim forms, affidavits, memoranda, and other documents, 1880-1911, concerning William M. Coffin's military pension and medical disabilities from his service in the Civil War. The papers describe Coffin's state of health and war related disabilities as well as his experiences with medical care and treatments during and after the war. Coffin suffered from typhoid fever, gunshot wounds, hemorrhoids, chronic diarrhea, and rheumatism.
