Scope and Contents
Describes lives and experiences of four generations of Scudder family members who were Protestant medical missionaries in Ceylon and India, 18191960s. Includes information on medical work, social conditions, education, caste system, customs and religions, hospitals, and foundation of the Arcot Mission and the Vellore Christian Medical College. Major figures are John Scudder and Ida Sophia Scudder. Parts 13 were composed in the late 1930s; volume completed in 1970.

Biographical / Historical
Dorothy Jealous married John Scudder III, greatgrandson of John Scudder (17931855) in 1929 and travelled to India. She lived and worked first in Miraj and then at the hospital at Raniput. She returned to the United States in 1935 and began her research into the Scudder family’s work in India.
