Scope and Contents
This positive photocopy of a minute book of the Medical Staff
of St. Christopher's Hospital for Children, spanning 22 January
1900 to 28 November 1916, contains minutes of special and regular
meetings of the Medical Staff. The minutes provide information
about the staff, residents, and visiting physicians at St. Christopher's
Hospital during the early part of the twentieth century.
The minutes of the Medical Staff document the selection of candidates
to fill vacancies in St. Christopher's Hospital and its dispensaries.
The minutes reveal why a position was vacated, who was hired
to fill the vacancy, and the term of the appointment. Also
documented in the minutes are the appointments of residents
and visiting physicians.
The minutes also contain resolutions made by the Medical Staff.
These resolutions recommend the creation or elimination of
certain departments or positions, recommend changes in hospital
policy, or suggest ways to make the hospital more efficient.

Biographical / Historical
The Medical Staff of St. Christopher's Hospital for Children
was organized in 1900. The guidelines for the Medical Staff
are outlined in "Rules Governing the Medical Organization of
St. Christopher's Hospital for Children" (March 1900). These
guidelines reveal that the Medical Staff was a committee of
representatives from the medical staff of St. Christopher's
Hospital. The committee members were appointed by the Board
of Managers and served one year terms.
The Medical Staff of St. Christopher's Hospital was responsible
for nominating physicians to fill vacancies in the hospital
and its dispensaries; the names of the candidates were submitted
to the Board of Managers, who made the final selection. The
Medical Staff held regular meetings twice a year, in May and
October, and special meetings when it became necessary to fill
a position suddenly vacated by death or resignation.

This positive photocopy of a minute book of the Medical Staff
of St. Christopher's Hospital for Children was donated to the
Historical Collections of the Library of the College of Physicians
of Philadelphia on 22 August 1989 by the Library of St. Christopher's
Hospital. The original volume was loaned for photocopying,
courtesy of St. Christopher's Hospital, and returned in 1989.
The minute book was cataloged in 1992.
