Syphilis not caused by vaccination
Scope and Contents
This collection consists of a three-page statement from the Surgeons General of the United States Army, Navy, and U.S. Public Health Serivce which declares that syphilis cannot be contracted from calf lymph smallpox vaccination. The statement goes on to list the number of vaccinated individuals and explains safety measures, including that the quality of vaccines is prescribed by the Pure Food and Drugs Law and that sales are controlled by regulations drawn up by a board composed of the Surgeons General.
A note on page 3 reads "The original signed copy of this statement is on file at the Office of the Surgeon General, United States Public Health Service. Washington D. C."

Biographical / Historical
Merritte Weber Ireland (1867-1952) was the 23rd U.S. Army Surgeon General, serving in that capacity from October 4, 1918 to May 31, 1931.
Edward Rhodes Stitt (1867-1948) was an educator, author, the 16th Surgeon General of the Navy, and the 20th Chief of the Bureau of Medicine and Surgery. He was appointed Surgeon General of the Navy in 1920 and served through 1928.
Hugh S. Cumming (1869-1948) served as the 5th Surgeon General of the United States from 1920 to 1936.
