This small collection of Paul E. Steiner's writings contains his research on disease during the Civil War. In addition to a folder of correspondence, 1965, concerning an article, "A note on determining the correct medical diagnosis on historical personages", the collection includes the holograph manuscript and an incomplete typescript copy of "Common valor", Steiner's 1971 examination of four Civil War officers' reactions to wounds and disease.

The bulk of the collection is comprised of the holograph manuscript and typescript [carbon copy], [1977?], of Steiner's monograph, Medical history of a Civil War regiment: disease in the Sixty Fifth United States Colored Infantry. The manuscript describes the causes and effects of disease in the 65th U.S. Colored Infantry (1863-1867), a regiment notorious for its poor health. Steiner provides a history of the regiment, biographical information on its officers, a statistical account of disease and a consideration of the regiment's history by disease, and notes on general sanitary affairs. The manuscript was published by the Institute of Civil War Studies in 1977.

Biographical / Historical

Paul Eby Steiner, pathologist, was born in 1902. He received his M.D. from Northwestern University Medical School in 1932, then taught pathology at, first, the University of Chicago, then the School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania.

Steiner was certified by the American Board of Pathology and was a member of the American Association of Pathologists and Bacteriologists and the American Society for Experimental Pathology.

Custodial History

The collection of Paul E. Steiner manuscripts and typescripts was donated to the Historical Collections of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia by Paul E. Steiner on 27 February 1979.

According to a review of Medical history of a Civil War regiment by Harris D. Riley, Jr., in Tennessee historical quarterly,

Dr. Steiner had completed this manuscript at some point before the deterioration of his final illness set in. The manuscript had been stashed away in a quite unlikely location. Fortunately, it was discovered by his personal physician, his friend since boyhood, who made it available to the publisher.
