William John Potts papers
Scope and Contents
The collection contains eight biographical and genealogical compilations
of information on American physicians and surgeons and their
families, primarily during the 18th century. Each compilation
includes a index to names; an additional abstract of birth,
death, and burial information is available.
The information, compiled by William John Potts, 1872-1880, derives
from newspaper articles and other contemporary printed material;
wills; obituaries; church records; gravestone inscriptions;
and anecdotes. Included are records of births, marriages, deaths,
and burials for physicians in Connecticut, Massachusetts, New
York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania (primarily Philadelphia), Rhode
Island, and Charleston, South Carolina. Also included are lists
of physicians practicing in Philadelphia in 1798 and New York in
1786 and 1816.

Biographical / Historical
William John Potts, historian and genealogist, was born on 14 October 1842. He attended the University of Pennsylvania in 1863 and received an A.B. in 1866. Potts died in 1895. He was a member of the American Philosophical Society, the Historical Society of Pennsylvania, and the New Jersey Historical Society.
