Biographical / Historical

Samuel Preston Moore, Philadelphia, Pa., physician, was born in 1710. He was the son of Richard Moore, a physician, and Margaret Preston Moore. He married Hannah Hill on 12 August 1739. Moore died on 15 July 1785.

Samuel Preston Moore was a consultant to the Pennsylvania Hospital, 1751-1759, and the hospital's treasurer, 1768-1769. He was also Trustee of the General Loan Office and Pennsylvania's Provincial Treasurer, 1754-1768.

Custodial History

The Samuel Preston Moore letters were donated to the College of Physicians of Philadelphia as part of a larger gift of manuscript and printed material by Dorothy Kleinman on 9 June 1993. The letters were formerly in the possession of Samuel Kleinman, proprietor of the Schuylkill Book and Curio Shop.

The collection contains four autograph letters of Samuel Preston Moore, 1758-1767; most, if not all, of the letters are addressed to and concern the health of members of the Wright family of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Moore recommends and describes bleeding, restricted diet, cold bathing, and light exercise to treat a young woman, possibly suffering from a melancholic complaint, and John Wright's fever and consumption.
