Gibbon family papers
Scope and Contents
This bulk of this small collection of personal material from members of the Gibbon family of Philadelphia, 1901-1929, is comprised of letters of Marjorie Young Gibbon and surgeon John H. Gibbon concerning their engagement, daughter Marjorie, and Gibbon's 1905 transatlantic voyages. The collection also includes letters of the young John Heysham Gibbon, physician and inventor of the heart lung machine.

Biographical / Historical
Marjorie Young (1872-1956), daughter of General Samuel B. M. Young, married Philadelphia surgeon John H. Gibbon (18711956) in 1901. They had four children: Marjorie Young Gibbon Battles (b. 1902), John Heysham Gibbon (1903-1973), Samuel Young Gibbon (b. 1905), and Robert Gibbon (b. 1908).

The Gibbon family letters were donated to the Historical Collections
of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia by Mrs. Winthrop
H. (Marjorie Young Gibbon) Battles on 9 December 1992.
The collection was processed and catalogued in 1993.
