Scope and Contents

Since photography was invented in the mid-19th century, it has been used for medical purposes. The collection contains more than 4,000 photographs and showcases a variety of patients with diseases, injuries, and malformations, such as Civil War amputations, conjoined twins, and birth defects.

The City of Philadelphia, which holds archival materials from Philadelphia General Hospital, donated this collection of nearly 1,200 photographs to the College in 1978. The collection includes photographs of the buildings, physicians, residents, and patients.

This collection contains over 350 photographs of surgical techniques, practices, and cases which require surgery; orthopedic surgery patients; skiagraphs of fractured bones; and other related images. The majority of the images can be found in Ashhurst's Surgery; its principles and practice, for students and practitioners (1914).

Scope and Contents This collection of x-rays was discovered in the Mütter Museum storage area and inventoried in 2006. It was transferred to the Library on September 22, 2016.All of the x-rays seem to be of specimens found in the Mütter Museum, including the Soap Lady, and fetuses with defects such as spina bifida and anencephaly. No provenance information could be found; however, many of the envelopes note that the x-rays were taken by Dr. Gerald Conlogue in 1991. It is likely that...

Scope and Contents

This collection consists of photographs, negatives, pencil drawings, and other images related to Dr. Oscar Batson's work. It was donated to the Mütter Museum by his wife, Mrs. Eleanor Batson, along with numerous medical instruments and pathological specimens. The collection of photographs was transferred to the Library on September 22, 2016.
